“Didn’t you feel homesick during the National Day holidays?” “Of course not! Our counsellor came to our dormitories very early on the morning of October 1st, and even prepared tea parties for us. The guys from the same dormitory tour Lin’gang or Shanghai together. Most freshmen had a great holiday because on the one hand, we have felt the warmth of the new big family. On the other hand, we have developed a stronger sense of belonging. ” Yu Guojun, a freshman from the College of Computer Science, shared his (her) story happily to his parents.
During the National Day holiday, the mobility was strictly controlled to fight against the Pandemic. All the students were urged to stay where they were to spend their holidays. While implementing all the measures carefully to control the Pandemic, the university made efforts to do something with much affection for the students who stayed on the both campuses to ensure them a vigorous, secure, happy and harmonious holiday.
Students Felt Relieved with the Strict Control of the Pandemic
With the conception that all the measures should be oriented to the students, the university paid much attention to their life and security during the holiday. Much before the holiday, precautions against the Pandemic had been deployed by the concerned departments of the university. Centering on prevention and control of the Pandemic, telemarketing fraud, the safety problems about life and properties and regular requirements, all the colleges gave the students relevant lectures to enhance their awareness in safeguarding themselves. All the students were required to report their daily whereabouts and they were urged not to go out unless it was necessary; otherwise they must ask for leave. To ensure the students a secure holiday, the university had some guys on duty during the holiday and the councilors who live on the campus patrol every day.
Student Felt at Home with the Qualified Service on the Campus
“Are you homesick?” “Do you have any difficulties in your life and study?” “Are you homesick?” “Where are you from?” “Have you accommodated yourself to the new environment?” On the morning of October 7th, together with heads of some concerned departments, Weng, deputy Party Secretary of SUEP, paid a visit of the dormitories, the Innovation Laboratory, and the graduates’ laboratory located on Lin’gang Campus and conveyed consolation to the students there on behalf of the university.
While talking with the students in the dormitories, Weng inquired patiently about their life and study on the campus and extended season greetings to them on behalf of the university. He expressed two wishes to them. On the one hand, they are expected to make full use of the holidays to broaden their ken in different ways and update their scope of knowledge. On the other hand, they are suggested to set some lofty goals, spread patriotism and strive with their love for the country and the well-being of the people so that someday they will be able to accomplish themselves, give back to their parents and write a brilliant life story.
Weng was very happy to see so many students working in the labs on hearing that they stayed for the academic study, experiment and paper-writing. He recalled his own academic experience and encouraged them to live on their academic studies. He urged them to make full use of the holidays and balance their life and work. All their efforts at this university are believed to be their beautiful memories many years later. At the same time, he reminded them that they should be on the alert and keep in regular touch with their families while staying on the campus.
Through the holiday all colleges of this university have been showing concern to the students who stayed on the campuses, those who were required to postpone their return and those in quarantine. The councilors of all the colleges took the lead to go to the dormitories and canteens with some Party members and cadres among students to present their warm season greetings. By communicating with those who were required to postpone their return and those in quarantine, the university conveyed her love to them and acquired a good knowledge of their life and requirements. For Class 2018, while enjoying the holiday, they will have to endure pressures from hunting for jobs and preparing for the entrance examinations for graduates-to-be. To help these seniors, their councilors seized the opportunity to offer them different guidances in employment and preparing for the examinations in due course along with the tips in designing resumes and “Dos-and-Don’ts” for taking job interviews.
Students Beamed with So Many Colorful Events on the Campus
To decorate the life of students who stayed on the campuses during the holiday and convey the concern of the university to them, all the colleges organized various colorful recreational activities and hosted events to attract the students to keep them away from the Internet, step out of their dormitories and join the collective so as to stimulate their love for the country and the university and to create a happy and harmonious festivity.
To celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the founding of our motherland and intensify the patriotism in the new era, the College of Energy and Mechanical Engineering launched an activity with the theme “Where our hearts go and what this country hope for”. A board was erected and all the students were encouraged to say something to their mother country. On the board many students left their messages to extend their blessings to their country. They extolled the prosperity of the rising nation with enthusiasm.

The College of Electric Engineering planned some activities such as “Nametag-ripping”, basketball matches, and bicycle race for students of each year, from which they had tasted the joy of working out with classmates, strengthened their mutual understanding and developed a habit of doing physical exercises.
The College of Automation Engineering ushered freshmen to approach to Lin’gang so as to help them know better and assimilate themselves into the city of Shanghai as soon as possible. They were encouraged to see a bigger world and make efforts to do something for the country when they had witnessed the rapid development in Shanghai and her achievements since 1978. Yet students from the College of Mathematics and Physics had been arranged to visit some local Red Bases such as the Site of the First National Congress of CPC, the History Museum of Shanghai, and the Joint Savings Bank Warehouse as well as the Memorial Hall for Anti-Japanese War in Wusong. By learning the Red history they promised they would try to promote the revolutionary spirit afterwards.
