On the afternoon of October 27, a public lecture intended to promote scientific spirit, professional ethics and the style of study in colleges and universities, sponsored by the Office of Shanghai Leading Group for Publicity and Promotion of Scientific Spirit, Professional Ethics and Style of Study, was successfully held in the Lecture Hall, Room 117, of the Academic Building on Lin’gang Campus of this university, located in Lin’gang New Area, Shanghai. As a guest speaker, Professor Meng Guang from Shanghai Jiaotong University gave us a lecture in the theme China's Aerospace and the Spirit of Space Scientists and Astronauts”. The audience on the spot reached the number of 180 teaching staffs and students, who were from ours and other universities in Lin’gang New Area.
This lecture is an echo of the significant indication put forward by President Xi Jinping on promoting scientific spirit, professional ethics, and the style of study, aimed to publicize in full swing the exploits of and merits in Chinese astronauts, to which Party Committee of our university attached much importance. Li Mingfu, secretary of SUEP Party Committee, attended the lecture from the beginning to the end with Weng Peifen, deputy Party secretary of this university, as the host.
Professor Meng reviewed in details the developmental history of China's aerospace and the complicated situations it has been faced with. He elaborated the essence of China's astronauts’ spirit and its profound significance as well as the concern about the the development of space industry from the Party leaders and statesmen during the past seven decades. He gave the audience a vivid description of the great achievements China has made in the space industry.
Professor Meng has been vice director of the Faculty Committee of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Chair Professor, and senior technical advisor of Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST). He has also been funded respectively by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Changjiang Scholars Program. Up till today he has served as dean of the College of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, director of State-based Key Laboratory for Mechanical Systems and Vibration, and vice president of Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology.
For numerous space scientists and astronauts, their longstanding dream and unremitting pursuit is to explore the vast universe, develop the national space industry, and build up a power in space and aviation. The space industry of China started from scratch and now it has developed into a space power. But without the deep-rooted Chinese astronauts’ spirit it would have been impossible. Deeply touched by his emotional description of the dauntless spirit in Chinese space scientists and astronauts, the students present punctuated his speech by outbursts of applause.
After the lecture, Li Mingfu presented Professor Meng with an emblem of this university in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of Shanghai Electric Power University.
