How time flies and now the heyday came as expected. With great vicissitudes of seventy years we welcomed a fruitful season with talents we trained scattered hither and thither. On October 16th witnessed the grand opening of “Energy and Electricity Development Summit Forum” to achieve the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals with the 70th Anniversary Development Symposium in our university. The symposium was conducted off and on the line simultaneous via live broadcast. Alumni at home and abroad, all those from different walks of life who have concerned about the development of our university, reverend leaders and aged staffs, and the faculty and students gathered on the Internet to await this historical moment.

Shen Wei addressed the meeting that Shanghai University of Electric Power is a municipality-owned university of science and engineering with a fine tradition, a culturally sound basis and distinctive educational philosophy, famed as the cradle of electric technicians. Over the past 70 years, the university has been conscientiously implementing the Party's educational guidelines, fulfilling the fundamental task of morality education, focusing on serving the national energy strategy, practicing the education Being practical and pragmatic an going farther with a sound expertise, and adhering to the guiding principles with the discipline of electric power, practicality, and the production-line in the foreground; thus the university has gradually developed a school-running conception closely connected with energy and power production, speeded up economic growth and social development, and achieved new results in talent training. New progress has been made in subject construction and scientific innovation and new measures have been taken to open the door of education to the outside world. What’s more, a new mechanism has been introduced into the internal governance of the university, which has made great contributions to the nationwide industrial development of energy and electricity and the economic and social progress of Shanghai. He expected that the university will stand on another starting-point, volunteer to undertake the mission to achieve the goals for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, closely revolve around the factual needs of the municipality in innovation and transformation, spare no pains to build up a high-level local university and make more and greater contributions to the higher education of Shanghai.
In his address, Qiu Shuilu stressed that during the past 70 years, Shanghai University of Electric Power has been adhering to the spirit embodied in the university motto patriotism, diligence, pragmatism and enterprise, the educational philosophy “going farther with a sound expertise and putting theories into practice, and the guiding principles with the discipline of electric power, practicality, and the production-line in the foreground. She has been striving to meet the market demand for talents in the energy and power industry and for social and economic development, devoting herself to serving the national energy strategy, industrial development and social demands. By constantly optimizing the disciplinary layout, highlighting the characteristics of energy and power and continuously adjusting the subject layout, the university has made remarkable achievements in all aspects, and thus has been highly affirmed by the whole society, especially the industry of energy and power. He hoped that the university will continue to give full play to her steady advantages in the dominant discipline of energy and electric power and its relevant scientific research, going the way with the industry of energy and power, volunteering to serve the national strategies, breaking the barriers in disciplines; with a bold exploration and further integration of scientific innovation, talent training and the industrial development of the energy and power, the university will do her part to deepen the reform in energy supervision and the innovation and facilitate the overall development of energy industry.
Li Hexing delivered a keynote speech with the topic Serving the National Energy Strategies and Building up a Uniquely High-level University of Electric Power. He reviewed with emotions the history of Shanghai University of Electric Power and ceaselessly joint efforts made respectively in talent cultivation, discipline construction, scientific innovation, talent team construction, international exchange, social service, cultural inheritance, expanding the educational territories and Party construction since it was established 70 years ago.
The university had been attached to the Ministry of Electricity before 2000. And then it was transferred to Shanghai Municipal Government. In 2018 with the inspection and approval of the Ministry of Education it was rechristened Shanghai University of Electric Power. The university survived by the dominant discipline of electric power and on its basis she has been keeping pace with the industrial development of electricity. Holding tight to the national energy strategies and focusing on the fundamental task to promote morality education, the university adheres to the educational philosophy Being practical and pragmatic and going farther with a sound expertise and sticks to the guiding principles with the discipline of electric power, practicality, and the production-line in the foreground. She will continue to get herself closely linked to the national developmental strategies in energy and electricity, take it as a fundamental task to train t all-round and high-level talents oriented to the frontiers of the production of electric power and of economic construction, and write a new brilliant chapter to promote morality education and make contributions to the country in the new era.
The university has been standing up for the leadership of the Party with heart and soul, conducting a comprehensive reform in a down-to-earth manner with a steady progress in the in-depth construction, the educational scale, level, quality and an increase of the international influence of the university. Now this university has gradually evolved into an institution with the disciplines of energy and electricity in the foreground while other disciplines such as management, economics and humanities attained a balanced development. Since its establishment more than 70 years ago, with the backup of East China the university has been opening her arms to the whole country. By carrying out the Belt and Road Initiative, the university has spread her influence around the world with high-quality talents trained, academic competence and social serviceability enhanced, cultural inheritance and innovation strengthened, and international exchanges and cooperation fulfilled. Up till today she has trained more than 20 million engineers, technicians and managing staffs for the companies attached to the industry of energy and electricity and many concerned enterprises and institutions all over the country. Now out from the university have come numerous executives, technical elites, model workers, pacesetters and craftsmen. Thus she is known as the cradle of electrical technicians.
He pointed out that currently Shanghai University of Electric Power has entered a new phase of development; we must stand on the solid ground and firmly seize the opportunities when the country is implementing two-carbon strategic transformation; by taking morality education as our fundamental task, we will try to overcome difficulties, go ahead with the favorable situation and strive to achieve new breakthroughs with a new strategic pattern created so that the goals of our university during the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan can be achieved with the educational level and overall strength greatly enhanced; by speeding up the construction of a local high-level university with the foreground of energy and electricity through reform, innovation, transformation and upgrading, we will write a brilliant chapter of our own and do our part to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Wang Hongzhou and Feng Weizhong, as representatives of brother universities and alumni, also addressed at the forum. Sir Jim McDonald, president of University of Strathclyde, an international educational collaborator from Scotland, sent us a congratulatory message via an online video. The university was showered by congratulatory letters and telegrams from fraternal colleges, organizations and companies, and individuals all over the world. Alumni at home and abroad also extended their congratulation upon the 70th anniversary of the founding of the university via short videos. Pan Weiguo, a professor from the College of Energy and Mechanical Engineering, and Zhao Jiale, a student from the College of Electronics and Information Engineering, delivered a speech respectively on behalf of all the faculty and students.
Professor Wen Jinyu from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) gave a keynote report on the Energy & Power Development Summit Forum targeting the Double- Carbon Goals with the theme of Cognition and Consideration of New Electric System.
While celebrating the 70th anniversary, the university held a number of academic forums and teaching seminars. Zhao Dongyuan, a professor from Fudan University and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the World Academy of Sciences, Shi Zhengrong, a professor from our university and a fellow of Australian National Institute of Technology Science and Engineering, and Minghou Xu, a professor of HUST respectively funded by Changjiang Scholars Program and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, delivered an academic lecture in turn at the forum. According to the current and future strategic targets oriented to achieve the carbon-peaking and carbon-neutrality goals set by the country, the three experts discussed the necessity and importance of the implementation of the dual-carbon missions, photovoltaic and new energy, and materials and energy in combination with their own years of scientific research and their achievements. Among the attendees there are more than 200 experts, scholars, teachers and students from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University and Tongji University and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
The exemplary demonstration of teaching the ideological curriculum in the new era among five universities in Lin’gang was also held on the same day. 15 teachers in total from Ocean University of Shanghai, Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), Shanghai Dianji University, Shanghai Jianqiao University, and our university shared their experiences and achievements in conducting the ideological courses.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the university took some remedial measures exclusively for those alumni who couldn’t not come back to the scene to learn about the glorious history of their Alma Mater and celebrate the 70th anniversary of their university by hosting some live broadcasting events for celebration so that they could register, attend meetings, forums and exhibitions, send congratulatory messages, make donations and tour around via the Internet. Besides, we also hosted some events in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the university, including the opening ceremony of the newly-built Hall of the University History, the completion ceremony of the “Home-of-Clouds” Tower, a multi-functional recreational retreat for the faculty, the unveiling ceremony of the Embossment Wall “Light of Electricity”, the premiere of the movie My University and Me, a 70th Anniversary Theatrical Performance, the launching of a new website, the release of a latest video and booklet for publicizing the new image of the university as well as punching-the-clock included in the carnival events for celebration. These events fully demonstrated the true colors of the whole faculty and students of this university and bonded them more closely.
