On March 5th, an opening ceremony for Class 2022 as well as a commencement ceremony for Class 2019 was held by live broadcasting on Yangpu campus of this university. Huang Dongmei, vice president, representatives of outstanding alumni, concerned staffs from the College of Continuing Education and the management of all the teaching sites, along with more than 1,000 freshmen of Class 2022 and graduates of Class 2019, attended the ceremonies, which was hosted by Ms Wong Chi-ping, executive deputy dean of the College of Further Education.
The ceremonies were declared open to the accompaniment of the solemn national anthem. On behalf of the university Huang Dongmei extended a heartfelt welcome to the freshmen and the warmest congratulations to all the graduates. She said that this year, it was the first time to hold the two ceremonies in the same hall off and on the line so that all the freshmen could share the joy of the harvest season of the graduates resulted from their strenuous effort while the latter could feel their own personal growth during the past three years by witnessing the coming of younger students. To the freshmen she expressed her wishes that they should develop the habit of lifelong learning and give priorities to acquiring a higher academic degree and improving their competence; they broaden their horizons and lay a solid foundation for their prospective careers; meanwhile they strictly observe the rules and disciplines of the university, finish their academic studies in due course and bear in mind the university motto of being patriotic, diligent, pragmatic and enterprising so that they will develop themselves a strong sense of morality, train themselves into outstanding talents to meet with the demands of the times and live up to the expectations of their families, their alma mater, and the society. As for the graduates, she hoped that they will continue to show their concern about the development of their alma mater because each leap the university makes is motivated by the alumni’s anticipation and support. She also hoped that all of them will find their own positions, keep moving and pose a down-to-earth attitude to grow up to a towering tree with the endless love and support of their alma mater.
Guo Lijun, representative of the Class 2022, delivered a speech at the welcome ceremony, saying that he is proud to be a member of Shanghai University of Electric Power. He expressed his burning desire to go on learning by sharing his own experience. On behalf of all the freshmen he promised that the will cherish the golden opportunity, overcome all the difficulties, study hard and live up to the expectations of the university administration, all the faculty and his own family for their staunch support. Gao Wei, representative of the Class 2019, recalled the past three years of study and shared his own academic experience with the freshmen. In his concluding speech, he vowed that as a member of SUEP, he will always remember the edification of his alma mater, remain an enterprising spirit, and make contribution to the development of the motherland.
Zhang Xiongwei, a national model worker and an outstanding alumnus of this university, gave all the students present the first and the last lesson. With plain language he shared his experience how he evolved himself from a migrant worker into a national model worker. He beamed with excitement when he recalled the day he walked into the Great Hall of the People as an ordinary worker to receive the honors from the Party leaders and statesmen. He said that without the education he had received and the conception of life-long learning in his alma mater all the honors and achievements would have been impossible, so he expressed his hopes that all the students will always be grateful, keep learning, work hard with an enterprising spirit, and return gratitude to his alma mater and society with remarkable achievements.
At the end of the ceremonies Huang Dongmei conferred Zhang Xiongwei with an appointment letter as an adjunct professor and read out The Decision to Confer Class 2019 with Bachelor's Degree Presented by Shanghai University of Electric Power; Jiang Xiaohua, secretary general of the Party Branch and dean of the College of Further Education, read out the Decision to Award Outstanding Students of Adult Colleges and Universities in Shanghai in 2021 as well as the Decision of Award Excellent Students from SUEP in the Academic Year 2020-2021.
